This is a charcoal portrait of Rey from Star Wars' The Last Jedi, which I did for a drawing class at St. Cloud State University before Covid 19 hit the U.S. It was an example of foreshortening for the class, but for me it was a project that meant so much more. If you've ever watched the Star Wars movies, then you know just how pivotal this moment was when she climbed the mountain Luke Skywalker had exiled himself to in order to present him with his light saber. It was a moment when the younger generation was calling out in desperation to the older, more experienced generation in order to save the world.
Rey's character has been such an inspiration to girls and women across our country, especially during such a period of political upheaval. I drew this because I wanted a reminder of how all women and girls are now being called upon to save our country & our world. She shows strength, determination, perseverance, intelligence, loyalty, beauty, and honor among other incredible characteristics that I strive to hold for myself and my growing daughters.
What is Rey telling you? Where are you being called to fight?
